Why You Should See the #1 Movie in America - Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures has surpassed expectations at the box office, coming in #1 during its opening weekend! It beat Rogue One: A Star Wars Story by bringing in $22.8 million! #BlackGirlMagic

Here's five reasons this film became a MUST SEE film and what all the hype is about:

1. The film may have taken place in the early sixties but couldn't be more timely; especially with awards season. The film and cast members have been nominated for awards such as the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, Critics' Choice, BAFTA, and NAACP.

2. Buzz has continued as word about the untold story has been spread by celebrities such as Common, Nas, Jamie Foxx, Debbie Allen and many more, praising the film on all social channels.

3. Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae and Octavia Spencer played the roles of the three Black female mathematicians who began working for NASA in the 1950s and helped launch astronaut John Glenn into orbit. Did you know that all of the characters they play (Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan) are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Happy Founders' Day!)?

4. Let's not forget about the men in the film. From Luke Cage and House of Cards to Underground and Straight Outta Compton, Mahershala Ali and Aldis Hodge, play the roles of Jim Johnson and Levi Jackson; supportive husbands to Katherine Johnson and Mary Jackson.

5. Lastly, Dallas based Black-owned bakery, A Cakemaker, created special Hidden Figures cookies for an Allied Media interactive brunch with the DFW Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. Her cookies were featured on Hidden Figures and Octavia Spencer's Instagram page. #DallasBlackBusinesses #BlackGirlMagic
