Being Mary Jane Season 3, Episode 10 ("Some Things are Black and White" ) Finale Recap

The finale begins with Eddie bringing up the idea of him and MJ going on a real date while they are laying in bed. MJ tries to change the subject by offering to get them a glass of wine, but while she's in the kitchen David's mom rings her doorbell!! She goes back to the bedroom and tries to ignore the knocks, hoping she'll leave, until Eddie tells her it sounds like her ex's mom is pretty persistent. So she instructs him to stay in the room and goes to answer the door. David's mother begins by saying she hopes she can still come say hello when she's in town, and then goes into announcing she is now a grandmother to a new baby girl (David's daughter). She then tells MJ that David never stopped loving her and unsuccessfully tries to get MJ to forgive David for everything (including hooking up with Lisa). MJ was having no parts of it and asked David's mom if she would forgive him if he did it to her and then told her to beg him not to be like his mother if she wants to help! Later in the episode, while getting bbq with Kara, MJ sees David, his fiance, and his baby girl. They see each other but don't say anything, and when Kara asks her if she's okay, MJ says she doesn't think there's anything that can break her after the year she's had (true!).

Eddie eventually gets a real date with MJ when they go do karaoke, and MJ gets the side eye from a Black couple at the karaoke bar. In a later scene, MJ calls it off with Eddie after he brings up how one of the Black women he dated used to over analyze things. When MJ asked him if he understood why a woman of color would have to over analyze things, he said no. To which she said she didn't want to have to explain things like that and her "kitchen" to him (and he looks at her kitchen in confusion...she tells him not that kitchen...). She then tells him she wants a Black man and Black love, to which he said he concedes, because he can't give her that. And that was the end of that.

Unfortunately, it didn't end before SNC got wind of "The Real" talking about SNC and MJ after she was trolled on social media for dating a White guy after complaining about Black men not being there for Black women in her "Ugly Black Woman" segment. Greg asks MJ to make her first episode on "Talk Back" about interracial dating. MJ pushed back, but Greg quickly turned it into a I got you this show back so you owe me and I'm collecting demand. So MJ had to go tell her think tank the less than thrilling news, and made it a learning lesson when the college intern (who wanted the first episode to be about police brutality of Black people) complained that she didn't come to work on fluff pieces...MJ told her when you get a check you find a way to give the person  paying you what they want. #TheMoreYouKnow So they get to work and make the first episode happen...

Meanwile, also at SNC, Kara attempts small talk with Marisol and is met with what is essentially a cold shoulder. Moments later, Greg tells Kara that Marisol is threatening to report Kara to HR for intimidation and harassment (including Kara saying Marisol was sleeping with Greg)! He tells Kara she needs to go to HR and fix it. MJ convinces Kara to try talking to Marisol and being honest about how she feels (regarding paying dues and how she kind of wishes maybe she flirted to get ahead faster when she was younger). So Kara tries to talk to Marisol, starting with some super fake complimenting of her shoes in the break room. Then she just directly asks Marisol about wanting to report her to HR. But she makes the mistake of telling Marisol she really needs it to go away, to which Marisol tells her to offer her the anchor spot on her new show! A couple of scenes later, Marisol is anchoring the show. But...moments later, Greg and a woman from HR walk into Kara's office and informs her that Marisol filed the complaint (SMH! She filed it anyway), and now management and Kara will have to figure out how Kara will produce the show without contact with Marisol during the investigation. Yea...wonder how "management" is going to do that, given Kara is not on Greg's good side after suggesting Marisol was sleeping with him! But guess we won't learn more about Kara's fate until next season.

Speaking of someone's fate...smh...despite Cece asking MJ for compensation for helping her with ideas for bringing back "Talk Back," MJ goes through with making an appearance at Cece's bookstore. She even tells Cece that she has a way for the both of them to get a check. She asks Cece to work with her on a book about their accident and friendship from extortion. Cece agrees and the two go to meet with the publisher from last episode and two additional people. MJ and Cece begin to share the story about how they became friends from extortion (was I the only one who had a sneaking suspicion about this...it just didn't feel right). MJ would chime in occasionally, but you know Cece...she took over, telling most of the story. And well...the two extra people were police officers, and Cece was arrested, y'all!!! MJ told her she got greedy when she asked for more money. Cece was pretty upset, because she had started to believe they really were becoming friends. She called MJ some less than flattering names, and threw in that she was probably MJ's only friend b/c she killed her other friend! OUCH! But when MJ told Cece she was done with people taking advantage of her, Cece had one of the officers take her hat off her head and tip it to MJ as a showing of respect. I'm sad they didn't actually become friends, but even I was threw with Cece when she asked for more money at the end of the last episode. This is followed by MJ going home and looking in the mirror (set to Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama"...I have to also bring up that the episode's quote was "Save the drama for your mama" -  An African-American Proverb... never thought of that saying as an African-American proverb...but anywho...), as she has flashbacks to scenes from the series that basically reflect her letting go of things that have hurt her or attempted to set her back (including moments with Andre, David, Sheldon, Lisa...her facial injuries after the accident, moments with her family...and so on)

Back at MJ's parents' house, Paul Sr. told PJ he was proud of him for getting Niecy a car, because she deserves to know how it feels to have a man show up for her. PJ said Patrick is there for her and Paul Sr. just can't see it. But I'm more thinking...what about him? Paul Sr. has definitely showed up for her. But anyway...Later, while driving with her two kids in the back, Niecy is pulled over by two White officers. When she asks why she is pulled over, she is eventually told for playing loud music. She asks if that is against the law among other things, and not feeling there was a valid reason for her being pulled over attempts to roll up her window and prepare to leave. She is pulled out of the car  and eventually tased and then pinned to the ground, while her children watch as she yells for help. The scene then cuts to SNC, where MJ's intern and associate producer are watching a video of what happened to Niecy. When they tell MJ what they are watching, MJ's response is that she can't watch another one of those. The intern says it's their job to watch, and then she tells MJ she has to see this, as it shows why Black women have to be a part of the conversation. She tells MJ this is what they have to report on instead of fluff pieces. MJ zones out as she looks at the video, realizing it's her niece. And the episode, and season, ends...just like that.
