How to Get Away with Murder Season 1 Finale Recap

Well done How to Get Away with Murder...the murderer was revealed and my guess was way off! Talk about hiding in plain sight...

But first...this 2-hour finale spent some time on the individual characters' stories, not just the slow revelation of what really happened the night of Lila's murder and who killed her. So let's start with the individual stories...

It seems Bonnie and Asher are officially more than a fling...and possibly a couple.

Michaela's ex-fiancee's mother asked to meet over dinner. Michaela went expecting her to ask for the ring back, but it turned out she came to ask Michaela to try to get her son back...which led Michaela to conclude the only reason his mother would want a girl she hates to marry her son is b/c her son is bi/gay/experimental. So Michaela declines...O but later, Michaela's story gets a bit more interesting. Earlier in the episode she blamed Becca for her wedding being called off, but towards the end of the episode she will learn she has Laurel to thank for that! Laurel gave Michaela her real engagement ring and revealed she found it in Connor's car right after Michaela realized she lost it. Laurel kept the ring, b/c she knew it was the only way to ensure Michaela would stick with whatever plan the group wanted to go with (since she thought she could be implicated in the murder if the cops found her ring in the woods)! Yep...that happened. Of course, in the end, even though it led to her engagement being called off, it turns out he's not the guy she wants to marry anyway. But still...

Then there's the story line between Oliver and Connor. Oliver asks Connor to get tested before they sleep together again, given his drug history (Connor's alibi) and the fact that he cheated on Oliver. They go get tested together, and Connor is very nervous about the results. He asks the clinic to call him with the results instead of waiting with Oliver and getting both of their results together at the clinic. Later, Oliver calls Connor to see what his results were and tells Connor his were negative. Connor finally calls the clinic back and finds out his test results are negative. But, when he goes to see Oliver later that evening, Oliver reveals that his test results were actually positive for HIV.

Also, before we get to Lila's murder...a bit on the case against Nate for Sam's murder. The judge wouldn't let Nate out on bail. So Annalise got Frank to get some guys to beat Nate up in jail, thinking the judge would change her mind and let him out on bail. But instead, the judge just puts him solitary. So Annalise has Bonnie, Frank, and unknowingly Asher, pull off plan B to get Nate out of jail. It turns out Nate's parents are friends with the judge. So Bonnie gets Asher to go greet the judge, and Frank takes pictures. The prosecutor receives the pictures and has the judge replaced by another judge. This judge let's Nate out on bail. Also, Annalise allows the prosecutor to interview her and makes up a story about Nate following her home to make sure she is safe. She says when she got home she and Sam started arguing, and Nate came in to stop Sam and a physical altercation took place.

When Nate is released from jail he wants nothing to do with Annalise, even after she tells him it was her who got him out of jail, not his attorney. Then she explained to him that she's not trying to set him up, but is trying to help him by making up the story she told the prosecutor about an altercation between him and Sam the night Sam was murdered. Nate is still not having it, and wants nothing to do with her, but he does help me get why she made up the story...it explains why his prints are on Sam's ring and gives the jury reasonable doubt!!! Oooo...now I get it...LOL. Later in the episode he calls the number she gave him for a better attorney.

Now...for what you've been waiting for all season...what really happened the night Lila was killed!

O...wait...I almost forgot...Wes and Laurel locate Becca's former neighbor in a mental hospital. Becca traced Wes' phone at the hospital. So she knew he was there, but when he came home he lied about where he was. So she didn't trust him anymore, and assumed he thought she killed Lila. And indeed, he and the other students start to believe she did. They tie her up and call Annalise, who then takes them all to her house. She decides to put Becca on trial, having all of the students (except Asher of course, who is not a part of any of this) go through all of the evidence again and prove to her Becca killed Lila. When Asher shows up in the middle of this, the students hide in the basement, taking Becca with them. Asher nearly exposes his relationship with Bonnie to Annalise by trying to confront Frank on it, thinking only he and Frank were in the house. After he leaves...the students go back upstairs to work on their cases, but they leave Becca down in the basement. At one point Annalise goes down there to try to get the truth out of her...and later Annalise makes Wes go down there to try to get the truth out of Becca. Later, Annalise goes back down there and Becca is gone. She asks who let her out, and no one steps forward. Now everyone is scared she's going to turn them in, like she threatened when they first started accusing her of killing Lila in this episode. But don't worry, we find out where she went...we'll get to that...

NOW...to the night Lila was killed. Lila tells Becca they can't be friends anymore and really never were. She was just bored with her life. She said she's not trash like Becca, and is tired of acting like Becca, including sleeping with Sam. So she's going back to Griffin. This of course upsets Becca and they get into it. Becca's neighbor hears and sees all of it. Lila then calls Sam, who is out of state, and says her plan to sleep with Griffin to make him think the baby is his isn't working b/c he won't sleep with her. Convinced that Sam is trying to get a job at the university he is set to speak at the next day, to get away from her and their baby, Lila decides she is going to tell Annalise everything. On her way to Annalise's house, Annalise is on the phone discussing the job opportunity at the university with Sam while Bonnie is  in the room. Lila knocks at the door, and Bonnie answers. It seems like Bonnie may know who she is, but she asks Lila if she's there about Frank. When Lila says she needs to talk to Annalise about Sam, Bonnie tells her she should go. Then when Annalise asks Bonnie who was at the door, Bonnie says some girl for Frank.

.Meanwhile, out of anger, Becca goes to see Griffin. Griffin tells her Becca is acting weird. She went from not wanting to see him all summer to trying to be around him all of the time all of the sudden. Becca gives him some drugs then gets him to take her up to his room. Before sleeping with him, she sends Lila a text from his phone asking her to come over to see him. Lila walks in on Griffin and Becca having sex. They get into it, and then Becca storms off. Griffin keeps trying to call Lila. Lila calls Sam again from the roof of her sorority house, and says it'll be easier if she just leaves. Sam comes back into town to meet her on the roof. They talk and he convinces her that he's going to leave Annalise for her. Then he leaves and makes a phone call. He tells the person on the other line that they owe him and they need to handle this for him. That person then goes and kills Lila on the rooftop. When they take her up to the water tank they fail to realize her phone dropped on the roof. Griffin looks for Lila everywhere, including on the rooftop and can't find her. Later, Becca sneaks into the sorority house looking for Lila too. Unlike the murderer and Griffin, she spots Lila's phone. And since the two of them have gone on the water tank before, she looks for Lila up there. When she sees hair near the opening, she opens the tank. And that's when she finds Lila. People come up on the roof, and knowing everyone would think she did it, she goes into the water tank with the deceased Lila to hide. She goes home soak and wet, and is spotted by her neighbor. Knowing he already saw her confrontation with Lila, she decides she has to get him to do drugs that night so no one would believe him if he said he saw her arguing with Lila earlier in the night and then come home soak and wet. So she invites him over and gets him to smoke PCP and another drug. He has a mental breakdown in his apartment, and that's when she calls 9-1-1 on him. And there you have it.

So who killed Lila for Sam?? The one person in the show who consistently gave off this vibe that he may have killed someone and could kill again (at least to me...I certainly got a dark past vibe from him)...FRANK!!!!

And who killed Becca?

Nope...that's not a typo. Remember when Annalise asked everyone who let Becca out from the basement...cut to last scene...after Annalise consoles Wes, who feels he is to blame for all that is happening and what happened to Becca, Sam and Nate, by making him repeat after her repeatedly that Sam killed Lila (with the hope that they would both believe it one day to make themselves feel better about all of it)...

Annalise walks down to the basement to meet Frank...

Annalise: Was it you?
Frank: No. Annalise, you know I'm not that guy. Besides, I thought it was you.
Annalise: Because I'm that guy?? Of course, not.
Frank: Now what?

<You think they're talking about who killed Lila, right? And that Frank is denying killing Lila...but wait for it...>

Frank looks down and there's Becca's dead body!! Now let's replay their last conversation...

Annalise: Was it you?
Frank: No. Annalise, you know I'm not that guy. Besides, I thought it was you.
Annalise: Because I'm that guy?? Of course, not.
Frank: Now what?

Sounds a lot different now that you know Becca's dead body is there. Is Annalise asking Frank if he killed Becca, and Frank saying no he thought she did. And now they are both like...so what do we do...who killed Becca??? I suppose that's what we will have to find out in Season 2.

[SN: I appreciate how they have the additional side story of one of Annalise's clients each episode. Reminds me of earlier seasons of Scandal. This episode a priest, who's in love with a woman, killed another priest who molested a young man who ended up committing suicide. He plead guilty, but later changed his plea when the woman came into the courtroom. But when Annalise got the woman to say on the stand she was being intimate with the priest at the time of the murder, the priest confessed to the murder and was taken away.]

And it just hit me...so Frank is Annalise's Huck?? Now that that's hit me, it kind of diminishes the twist factor.
