Scandal Season 5, Episode 1 ("Heavy is the Head") Recap

The season starts with what seems like a big reveal party for Olitz, buuut...we soon realize it isn't when Liv and Fitz go down separate elevators to the party. The party is actually for the Queen of Caledonia, her son the Prince, and his wife (who is an American). Turns out Fitz needs to set up some naval bases in Caledonia. Liv is seated next to Abby and denying she and Fitz are back together, while Elizabeth North is informing the dressed and ready to go First Lady that she will not be attending the evening festivities. That's right, Mellie will be out with the "flu" as she is unwanted at the White House, given her separation from Fitz.

Before we get into our main plot, let's go into the side plot involving the Queen, Prince, and Princess. A couple of scenes after the party the Princess is found dead after a car crash, as is her bodyguard. The Queen hires Liv to look after the situation, such as making sure pictures of the deceased Princess is not plastered all over the newspapers. However, Liv soon discovers the Princess was actually murdered (by a hacker posing as paparazzi hacking into her car). Why? Because she was having an affair with her bodyguard and pregnant by him! Despite Fitz threatening to prosecute Liv if she told the Queen the Prince had the Princess killed...something about threatening America b/c it could prevent him getting the naval bases in Caledonia...she tells the Queen her theory. To Liv's surprise, the Queen informs her that her son loved the Princess so much even if the baby looked just like the bodyguard he wouldn't think she had cheated on him with the bodyguard. O...and the Queen basically admits she had the Princess killed (to protect the throne from a false heir, or course), but reminds Liv of her diplomatic immunity and that NDA Liv signed. But you know Liv...that wasn't the end of it. The Queen learns Liv told the Prince, and he told the Queen she will abdicate her throne (making him king) and go live in the winter palace alone for the rest of her life. And why would the Queen go along with it, well because the Prince didn't sign the NDA and would tell the world what she did. And Liv's response to the Queen's earlier notion that all fairytales don't have happy endings, all evil queens go down! Off with her head! Well maybe just off with her crown...lol...Before I go to the main plot, can I throw in, I feel the queen on not wanting the child to become royalty since it wasn't her son's child, but yea...murder may have been a bit too far...

Meanwhile in Olitz land, Liv is all up in the White House, and Mellie is all up OUT the White House. Not only was she told she couldn't come to the party, she was told Fitz wouldn't be at her swearing in. When she asked Elizabeth how she could stab her in the back after what she did for her, Elizabeth told her she already paid her back by getting her elected and she became Fitz Chief of Staff on her own. Essentially saying, "Bye Felicia!" When Abby tried to tell Elizabeth people were already questioning the President and First Lady's relationship and he should go to the swearing in, Elizabeth told her to do her job b/c Fitz wasn't going. Unfortunately, when Abby tried to do her job and explain why Fitz wasn't at the swearing in, she was told by the press that he was indeed there (unbeknowst to both her and Elizabeth). Why was he there? Because Liv told him he had to go support Mellie, afterall she had been there for him in similar situations when she didn't want to be there either.

Poor Mellie took Fitz' presence as a sign they would be together forever...yea she gave a whole spill about being happy about how their future would be after she fixed things. But Fitz hit her with them "papers" (divorce papers). Mellie tried to go to Cyrus to get him to try to get his job back and to make Fitz realize they need to save face for her next eight years. But Cyrus was not really feeling it. Mellie suspected it was because he thought Fitz would ask him back and he didn't want his return to be tied to Mellie. She told him just as much and added that Fitz didn't want Cyrus back just as much as he didn't want Mellie back.

Meanwhile, at the White House, (rewinding back to Liv's convo with Fitz about telling the Queen the Prince murdered the Princess...she was so off base), Elizabeth North and Rosen were also present during what Elizabeth described to Abby as a "lovers' quarrel" between Liv and Fitz over justice for American life v. naval bases. Liv then returned home, where Huck had apparently been staying (since Liv was crashing at the White House) waiting for Liv's return so she could "fix" him. She told him she couldn't "fix" people, and he later ends up going to Jake for help. Hmmm... wonder how that will turn out.

Later at the White House, Fitz tells Liv about the divorce and she seems less than thrilled (you know the whole being dissected in the public eye before you two even have your stuff together and in order type of thing). Just when he agrees to hold off on his plan to divorce Mellie and go public, and take Liv's suggestion of slowing down...Abby walks in on them embracing. She has a moment of side eye to Liv for lying to her about being back with Fitz, but goes on to tell them they need to come see something. Former VP, Sally Langston, exposes the President and First Lady's split (including that she didn't have a "flu" during the party for the Caledonia royalty) and that Liv was all up in Fitz' bed (cue Dru Hill...#SomebodysSleepingInMyBed) with pictures to boot on her tv show!!!! Yep...#GotEEM
