How to Get Away With Murder Season 2, Episode 3 ("It's Called the Octopus") Recap

The flash forward scene now shows Nate driving while calling Annalise, but she is unable to reach the phone.

Back in present time, Annalise has taken on a case involving a woman who is on trial for involuntary manslaughter of a married man who died while having sex with her at one of the sex parties she hosts. Annalise convinces her to provide a list of her clients that were in attendance at the party where the man died, and the students find some of the attendees to see if they can get them to testify on the stand...but to  no avail. Connor did get an invite to a sex party from one of the attendees though. When Annalise finds the students discussing their sex lives, and specifically Michaela never having had an orgasm, Connor says he and Michaela came up with a witness angle. The angle,..the two of them going to the party. When the woman who invited Connor to the party asks Michaela to stay longer, and Michaela agrees and leans in as if she is going to kiss her, Michaela asks her if she will testify. She says no, but her husband, who is also sitting there, blurts out that the defendant is probably guilty, because she had his wife switch cards with her. The cards are pairs, and you hook up with whoever has the matching card. His wife had the card that matched the married man the owner was on trial for murdering. So Annalise confronts the owner about switching the cards, and the owner essentially confesses to accidentally killing the man. She said she had fallen in love with him, but he had a wife. She switched cards to have the one that matched his, and she gave him nitroglycerin before they had sex...which can cause heart attacks when taken with Viagra. Annalise told her she was selfish and made those who love sex (including Annalise) look bad all because she couldn't handle being alone like the rest of them. She then told her to get out. Back at court she told the judge she had evidence that calls for the charge to be raised to first degree murder, the evidence being a new toxicology report showing he had Viagra and nitroglycerin in his system when he died. And then she called the victim's wife to the stand and had her admit to picking up her husband's prescription when offered by the pharmacist when she went to pick up her son's prescription, and was upset it was Viagra given they hadn't had sex in over a year. Annalise then proclaimed she gave him nitroglycerin knowing he was heading to a sex party and had probably taken Viagra, in an attempt to kill him. The wife burst into tears. But Annalise made it all up just to get her client off, knowing the DA wouldn't prosecute the wife. And it worked!

You think that's cold...how about her taking the sex party guest ledger and forging the signature of a daughter of a sergeant to blackmail him into giving Nate a job? Yep, Annalise did that.

As for the Hapstall siblings, a picture was leaked to the press of the siblings in what seemed like a romantic embrace. Frank finds someone who traced the picture back to the IP address belonging to Ms. Guthrie, the Hapstall's employee. Annalise asked Guthrie about the photo, and she admitted to leaking it. She said she noticed things that seemed off about the siblings and then she found their parents dead. She told Annalise the siblings were guilty of the murder of their parents.

Meanwhile, Annalise's mini-recorder with her defense strategy for the siblings and various requests for Frank went temporarily missing. We later see Asher receive a text from an unsaved number thanking him for the previous night, as he goes to see Bonnie. We later discover the text is connected to an earlier scene in the episode where Annalise thought she heard someone in the house, but only found a dead mouse in a mouse trap in the basement. She called Wes to come get the mouse, because Frank wasn't answering his phone...which led to another kinda awkward moment between the pair where they discuss their loneliness. Annalise asked if Wes missed Becca, and he said no. She then cuts him off when he begins to ask her the same question, assuming he was going to say Sam...to which she said she doesn't miss Sam and Wes should never worry about that. He tells her he won't, but that he actually was going to say Nate. She didn't answer that question, but it was clear she missed Nate. What's the connection to the text Asher received? Well we later see Asher meet up with Sinclair again, and she returns the mini recorder to Asher and asks him to let her know more information. We then see a scene that shows he was the one that broke into Annalise's house that night!

Asher tells Sinclair he is done, but then she threatens him by bringing up Thotter Lake. We finally have more info on this blackmail situation! Asher tells her he's still done being a mole and tired of her using Thotter Lake. Later, Sinclair sends Asher a text mentioning Thotter Lake and a picture of a young girl. Bonnie walks up behind him, sees the picture, and asks him if that's who he has been seeing that's been making him late to their dates and keeping him on the phone. Asher decides to lie to Bonnie and make up a story about meeting the girl in the picture in the library and says he has been seeing her. He later goes to his father for help with the situation.

Staying in the love department, Laurel attempts to learn more about Frank, but he tells her she doesn't want to know the bad things that have happened throughout his life. She asks him to share them with her, but he doesn't. She attempts to get info out of Bonnie, but to no avail.  When Connor is able to have sex with Oliver, he stops to tell Oliver about the sex party he went to for the case and tells Oliver he didn't do anything. Oliver told him that means he's changed, which was a good thing. Eve sends Annalise an email saying she misses her. Connor shows the group a pic of Michaela's date (the guy in Becca's pic), and Wes recognizes the guy from Becca's picture. Michaela rushes off to prepare for the date, and Wes stops the guy at the door to Michaela's building and pins him to the wall. Turns out the guy is not Eggs (the name on the text messages with Becca), but rather Becca is Eggs. He's Becca's foster brother, and he thinks she's dead because he hasn't heard from her. He tells Wes either Becca didn't know Wes as well as she thought and he killed her, or it was Annalise (to which Wes had flashbacks of Annalise telling him they knew where Becca was). He said Becca called him the day before the texts saying something was wrong and if something happened her lawyer did it. Wes tells him he won't tell Michaela he's Becca's foster brother if he doesn't see her again. The guy is shocked Wes would be willing to not tell Michaela, but Wes tells him it's because he's just as interested in finding out what happened to Becca. Buuut...later...there's a scene where Michaela is about to get it on with him...so guess he didn't keep his end of the bargain. Probably because he doesn't really trust Wes.

Back at Annalise's house, she opens a card from the client she got off. It was an invitation to one of her sex parties. Annalise tries on a few dresses and then heads out. But she ends up going to Nate's apartment. Nate asked her if she wanted a thank you and told her he knew she got him the job offer and wouldn't be taking it (because he didn't want to owe her anything). She tells him she misses him and would regret not trying to see if she could have another chance. He tells her she should go, but says he's not saying no...he just needs more time. He closes the door...and then he says, "I'm in." To who? To Wes, who was hiding in his apartment!

Then we go back to the flash forward scene, and Connor, Wes, Michaela, and Laurel are running. They go down into a ditch like area when they see a car. Someone asks if it's the cops, and then the car pulls over where they are. Someone gets out and flashes the light down where they are hiding. He yells out at them asking them what they are doing and tells them to get into the car. It's Nate in a police car and uniform, and they get into his car. This continues to get interesting!
